Morganton police search for armed convenience store robber

MORGANTON, N.C. — Morganton police are searching for a man who they said robbed a convenience store at gunpoint Friday morning.

A man in his mid-20s entered an Exxon station on Bethel Road and Interstate 40 just before 6 a.m., Channel 9’s partners at the Morganton News Herald reported.

The man first looked at cellphone chargers near the cash register and then walked to the back of the store and grabbed a soda.

Police said he returned to the front to pay for the drink, but when the clerk opened the register to make change, the man pulled out a handgun and demanded the money.

He stole a cellphone charger before he left the store and walked across the parking lot, officials said.

Police said he might have parked a car along an I-40 onramp.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Morganton Department of Public Safety at 828-437-1211 or Morganton-Burke Crimestoppers at 828-437-3333.
