Mystery surrounds Stony Point soldier's death

ROSE BARRACKS, Germany — Corporal Timothy McGriff -- assigned to Forward Support Troop, 2nd Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment and native of Stony Point, N.C. stationed in Vilseck, Germany -- died May 9, 2014 while being transported to a hospital, according to German medical authorities.

McGriff is survived by his wife Marina McGriff, his mother Deborah McGriff and father Timothy McGriff.

Friends described McGriff as a committed and uninhibited worker, and that the relationship between him and his battle buddies went beyond that of coworker.

"He was more than a soldier," said Sgt. Gregory Vazquez, McGriff's first line supervisor. "He was a brother. He always put a smile on our faces regardless of the situation. He was a hard worker and dedicated to his job."

McGriff's awards include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Drivers Badge.

The cause of death remains under investigation and no other details are available at this time

The date for a memorial service has not been scheduled.
