National Weather Service confirms EF1 tornado hit Caldwell County

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday afternoon that an EF1 tornado touched down on Sunday.

The tornado hit in Hudson near the intersection of Highway 321 and Mount Herman Road around 6 p.m. with maximum wind speeds of 105 mph, according the NWS.

Investigators said the tornado moved north northeast nearly 7 miles, uprooting trees and causing significant damage to a home.

The tornado peaked in intensity near Fairwood Drive, where two small homes had their roofs blown off, the NWS said.

National Weather Service officials said the tornado blew steeples off of two churches and caused some roof damage.

No one was hurt when the tornado hit, but it will be months before many families will be able to move back into their homes.
