NC-born Cheerwine, Krispy Kreme celebrate major milestone

To celebrate the North Carolina-born Cheerwine’s 100th anniversary and Krispy Kreme’s 80th anniversary, the iconic brands are blending Cheerwine with Krispy Kreme’s original glazed flavor.

"Cheerwine Kreme" will be sold in the Carolinas at Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Bi-Lo and Ingles stores until September.

Cheerwine is an independent, family-owned company based in Salisbury.

While experimenting with soft-drink recipes in 1917 during WWI sugar rationings, Cheerwine founder L.D. Peeler added a unique wild cherry flavoring to the mix.

Since then, it has been part of the Carolina culture.

Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937 out of Winston-Salem.

It has since expanded around the world.
