CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new law aimed at cracking down on boating while impaired in North Carolina will go into effect Thursday.
Under Sheyenne's Law, boating while impaired will go from a misdemeanor to a felony, carrying a prison term of almost three years.
It is named after Cabarrus County teen Sheyenne Marshall. She was killed on Lake Norman during the July 4th weekend in 2015 by an impaired boater.
Investigators said Keith Cerven, of Mooresville, was drunk while driving the boat that hit and killed her.

He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and is due back in court next month.
