New I-85 flyover bridge will connect I-85 to Concord Mills

CONCORD, N.C. — Construction will soon begin on a new flyover bridge on Interstate 85 that is meant to make it easier to access Concord Mills.

The two-lane bridge will connect the interstate to Kings Grant Pavilion, which is the first main entrance to the mall.

The bridge will replace the existing left turn lanes at the intersection and will improve traffic flow on Concord Mills Boulevard.

The $10.2 million project could start as soon as May and is expected to be completed by June of 2020.

"It's very important to have traffic management plan that doesn't affect drivers and visitors in that area,” North Carolina Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Thompson said.

Concord Mills attracts about 17 million visitors every year.

"It’s always congested, especially weekends and holidays,” Concord resident Katrice Mitchell said.
