New playground honoring Newtown victims to be built in south Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new playground to be built in south Charlotte will honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will work with a New York architectural firm on a design for the playground.

The $250,000 playground will be built in Park Road Park in south Charlotte.

As part of the design process, the firm will seek the ideas and suggestions of local school children on whey though would like to see included in the design.

Construction will begin in spring and take about four or five days to complete.

The department has secured $100,000 for the project and will seek the rest through private donations.

President Barack Obama continues his push for gun control with a White House meeting Monday with police chiefs and sheriffs.

Some of those officials are from cities and towns where there have been mass shootings, such as Newtown.
