New tool brings interactive AIDS, HIV information for Meck Co.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Mecklenburg County has a new tool to help combat HIV and AIDS.

A group from the community got the chance to see a new interactive, online tool called AIDSVu.

Using 2010 data from the Centers for Disease Control and the Health Department, it maps the prevalence of HIV and AIDS cases, breaking it down by ZIP code, age, race and gender.

It also compares rates of the epidemic to socioeconomic factors like poverty and education.

Commissioner Vilma Leake said she's charging the county to use this tool to educate and save lives.

"That we will look where problems are and put the necessary resources that we can eliminate the stigma and the issue of AIDS," she said.
