Newton city council member faces charges stemming from altercation after basketball game

NEWTON, N.C. - A Newton city council member is facing a list of charges Wednesday.

Channel 9’s partners at The Hickory Daily Record reported that Robert Abernethy faces charges for resisting arrest, careless and reckless driving and failure to obey a traffic officer.

Police said it happened Saturday, following the Duke-N.C. State basketball game in Greensboro.

Abernethy is due in court next month.

He said he's in shock over it all -- and claims he is innocent.
