Nobody hurt after Amtrak train, car collide in Mecklenburg Co.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials are investigating after they said an Amtrak train struck a vehicle in west Mecklenburg County overnight.

Crews told Channel 9 that the SUV was sitting on the tracks at the crossing of Old Dowd Road and Marshall Acres Drive when it was hit by the train around 1:30 a.m.

Police said no one was in the SUV when the train hit it and officers think the vehicle may have been stolen.

Emergency crews had to bring in heavy equipment to remove the SUV.

Officials told Channel 9 that the train was headed from New Orleans to New York with approximately 160 passengers on board. The train was delayed two hours and 20 minutes before continuing on its route.

Nobody on the train was hurt, and the road re-opened around 3:30 a.m.
