Officers, defense attorney teach how to handle abduction, sex assault

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A west Charlotte gym opened its doors Saturday to teach women and men what to do if they are abducted or sexually assaulted, beyond defending oneself.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers and criminal defense attorney Bob Trobich walked attendees at Ultimate Gym through the criminal and legal aspects of a potential case.

"If they see something, or if they're involved in something, what do you do?” Trobich said.

A month ago, a Plaza Midwood woman was in her yard when police said a man attempted to sexually assault her.

In June, police said a man tried to kidnap two female joggers in the Steele Creek area.

In March, police said a man with a knife tried to sexually assault a woman along the McMullen Greenway.

"You know, just always have to keep aware because you never know what's going on around you," class participant Gina Sullivan said.

Trobich said it is important that in any crime, "but especially in sexual assault, that people be aware, that they understand their surroundings and observe."

Trobich added that if anyone finds themselves a victim or witness, it is best to give police as many details as possible about the suspect and what happened, but don't guess.

And as a witness, Trobich said, don't talk to other people before talking to police.

"If you're involved in a crime, your best remedy is to be able to bring that perpetrator to justice," Trobich said.
