Officers swarm apartment of man killed Wednesday night

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The SWAT team and dozens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives swarmed Elmsley Grove Apartments on Thursday afternoon -- surrounding one apartment unit -- for more than five hours.

Residents stood by and watched in disbelief.

Marisol Ibarra told Eyewitness News this is the same complex where her son Jose Ibarra lived with his girlfriend.

She's heartbroken over the loss of her youngest son.

"I just can't believe that he's gone," she said.

Marisol Ibarra believes her son Jose was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

She said just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, she received a grim phone call from her son's friend.

Ibarra said Jose had just run to the store with her oldest son, Steve.

According to CMPD detectives, 17-year-old Jose Ibarra was shot as he sat in a car in a parking lot on Sharon Lakes Road.

Ibarra said her other son, 24-year-old Steve Ibarra was driving that car. Jose was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

"I never knew it would end up like this," Marisol Ibarra said.

Eyewitness News learned Jose's older brother Steve was arrested shortly after the shooting on a weapons of mass destruction charge. His mother said she believes her son tried to sell a gun to an undercover officer.

The charge is unrelated to the case of Jose Ibarra's slaying.

"Whoever did this was wrong he didn't deserve to be killed like that," Marisol Ibarra said.

Ibarra said she has no idea who would want her son dead. Police have not released information about a possible suspect.
