Official: Carowinds resets Fury 325 due to safety mechanism

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carowinds had to reset its newest thrill ride Fury 325 Friday afternoon due to a safety mechanism, park officials said.

Channel 9 received a tip that the ride was stuck and Channel 9 dispatched Chopper 9 to the amusement park.

From Chopper 9, empty cars could be seen running the track.

Carowinds officials did not confirm if the ride stopped or that it failed and stopped.

They run empty car cycles as part of a reset, officials said.

It is like when a vehicle's check engine light turns on, officials said.

They run hundreds of rides a day on each coaster.

Park employees also run empty car cycles randomly as routine maintenance to make sure the ride runs properly.

On Saturday, a faulty switch in the tunnel where Fury 325 goes under a park entrance caused a shutdown, a state labor inspector said.

"In case water would build up, they don't want the coaster coming through with water in it. So one of the float switches malfunctioned," the inspector said.

Carowinds reported five incidents prior to last week's Fury 325 shutdown this year.
