Man involved in 15-hour standoff with Chesterfield Co. officials shot, killed

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting and a standoff that lasted almost 15 hours in Chesterfield County.

Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a home just after 9 p.m. Friday on Westfield Creek Church Road after reports of a shooting, officials said.

Deputies said Norman Campbell, 63, barricaded himself inside the home and shot at deputies multiple times, but neither deputy was injured.

The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office and State Law Enforcement SWAT teams responded to back up the deputies.

Officials said it wasn't until noon Saturday that Campbell left the home armed with a gun and challenged the officers.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies fired back, striking him.

Officers immediately started first aid and a Chesterfield County EMS crew took Campbell to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Florence County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation.
