One of Burke County's 'most wanted' in custody after standoff

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — The man involved in a 9-hour standoff at a Burke County home is in police custody.

Burke County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene of a standoff in Connelly Springs Tuesday afternoon and tried to get the suspect -- Randy Bivens -- to surrender well into the evening.

Law enforcement personnel from several agencies surrounded the house on Icard Church of God Road.

Officials arrested Bivens at about 10:30 p.m. Tuessday. Police said they found Bivens passed out under the sink before he was arrested.

Deputies fired several rounds of tear gas into the home and used a bullhorn in hopes of getting Bivens to surrender. Later in the evening, a SWAT team and a robot were brought to the scene.

The robot was used to get a closer look at the home.

Bivens was recently added to the Burke County most wanted list.

"He is just a good boy who got on the wrong track -- the wrong stuff -- different kinds of drugs," a neighbor said.

Three schools in the area were placed on a soft lockdown Tuesday afternoon.

Bivens was accused of assault by strangulation and now faces additional charges.
