Officials: Pedestrian struck in hit-and-run near Lincoln Heights

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pedestrian was struck by a driver in a hit-and-run crash Monday morning near Charlotte’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood.

Officials said the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of Beatties Ford Road at Gilbert Street.

A Channel 9 crew arrived at the scene and observed crime tape being put up by police.

Authorities said one person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.  Investigators are looking for a gray Hyundai Sonata in connection with the incident.

Lonnie Herron rushed to the scene after hearing that her son, who has special needs, was hit by the car.

"I was at home this morning and I received a phone call, saying someone saw my son get hit by a car," Herron said.

LaAnthony Jenkins, 23 needs to have 24-hour care.

She said her son was with a life coach provided by insurance. The life coach was supposed to keep a close watch on her son, but somehow, he got outside. She said police told her he was hit trying to cross Beatties Ford Road.

She is praying that her son makes a swift recovery.

"He has internal injuries, something going on with the aorta, and may have a broken leg,” Herron said.

Channel 9 was told that part of Gilbert Street outbound was shut down due to the crash, but reopened shortly after 11 a.m.
