Fire crews said the people living in 26 homes in Cabarrus County within a half-mile of the spill were asked to evacuate after the wreck.
At 8:40 p.m., officials said there was no longer a hazard in that area and the evacuation was lifted. Crews offloaded the ethanol from the tanker by that time, as well.
The tanker was carrying 8,000 gallons of ethanol. Crews have stopped the leak and are reviewing potential environmental impacts.
The spill affected traffic on NC Highway 49 throughout the night.
One person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, paramedics say.
The driver of the truck has been charged with failure to maintain lanes.
