Parents praise CMPD officer who helped deliver baby on side of I-77

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer helped deliver a baby girl Saturday morning on the side of Interstate 77 at Nations Ford Road.

Now the girl, Lucia, is healthy and at home.

Teresa and Santiago Carrasco are grateful for Officer Charles Cho, who helped them bring their daughter into the world."I knew that God was with us and he was taking care of us," Teresa Carrasco said.

Teresa Carrasco started having contractions that day and the couple dropped their first daughter off at a friend’s house, headed toward the hospital.

But when they got on the interstate, Teresa Carrasco knew she was out of time.

"My husband said, ‘She's coming now isn't she?’ And yeah, too soon. We're not going to make it," she said.

"I was looking for a police and praise God we find one," Santiago Carrasco said.

He flagged the officer down, and they all pulled over.

They were about nine miles from the hospital here.

"He (the officer) told me, ‘Let's go to the hospital. It is near here,’ and I said, ‘It's coming out. I saw the head.’"

Then, the big moment came.

"After just a few seconds, she started crying, so I knew that she was breathing and she was just nice and pink and healthy looking," Teresa Carrasco said.

The Carrascos are happy parents, but they said the main reason for sharing their story is to show police in a positive light and how differences can be pushed aside for a greater cause.

"I think, really the focus should not be on what things separate us, or what our differences are, but those things that can bring us together," Teresa Carrasco said.

Teresa Carrasco said her daughter had no issues and she was released from the hospital Sunday.
