Police told Channel 9 that the driver of a Volkswagen Passat was headed down Lawyers Road when the pedestrian tried to cross the street to get to Glenmont Drive.
Investigators said the driver did not have time to react and hit the person with the right front corner and side mirror of the car.
That pedestrian was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and remained in critical condition early Wednesday morning.
The driver remained on scene and was cooperating with officers, police said. Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash, authorities said, and the driver was not facing any charges.
