Pike's Soda Shop remains closed after explosion, fire in kitchen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It could be several days before a popular South End restaurant reopens after an explosion and fire in the kitchen.

First responders were called Sunday night to Pike's Old Fashioned Soda Shop on Camden Avenue. Officials said the explosion and fire were reported while customers were inside the restaurant.

One of the employees was badly burned. A co-worker told Channel 9 that he's at the burn center in Winston-Salem.

The same co-worker also said the owner of Pike's told employees that a gas line exploded. That has not been confirmed by fire investigators.

Channel 9 contacted to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration about the incident, and officials said as of right now they're not investigating the explosion and fire.

Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster is taking a closer look at the restaurant and its history. She will have full report on Eyewitness News starting at 5 p.m.
