Wadesboro man sustained injury to leg before dying in police custody, SBI says

WADESBORO, N.C. — A man died Thursday while being taken into custody on a probation violation in Wadesboro, police said.

Authorities identified him as Lamont Perry.

Police said Perry was wanted on a probation violation stemming from an assault charge in Anson County. Records show he was convicted of assault in September and was committed to parole.

He died during an arrest encounter with probation officer William Kyle Torrence, 23. The incident was witnessed by several Wadesboro police officers, officials said.

His girlfriend talked to Channel 9 about Perry, but didn't show her face or share her name.

"I'm hurt and I just need some answers," she said. "I would never have thought about this in a million years."

She said he ran off Thursday night when he noticed a parole officer. Police contacted her Friday morning and said they tracked Perry down in the woods where he had fallen and was going in and out of consciousness.

The SBI gave an update Tuesday that said Torrence was able to handcuff Perry when it appeared Perry sustained an injury to his leg. Investigators said paramedics were called to the scene and rendered aid to Perry who was talking at the time. They said he suddenly became unresponsive and died.

Police said at this time there is no indication that any shots were fired during the incident.

Torrence has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation of the incident.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

The cause of death will be released after an autopsy is performed.

Anyone with information or who was in the area of Sikes Avenue around 11 p.m. Thursday is asked to call SBI at 704-454-5264.
