Larry McVay Jr. is charged with murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Daveon Andrews.

Authorities obtained warrants for McVay, 18, and early Tuesday morning, detectives from the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and the North Carolina Probation and Parole located and arrested him at his home.

"The reaction was... relief. The family was relieved," Andrew’s cousin Rayshaun Greene said of the arrest.

Greene is one of the founding members of Dream Team for Peace, a grassroots organization that has been fighting street violence.

He said losing a family member to violence while fighting for peace has been difficult.

"It was kind of like, discouragement,” Greene said. “They want to discourage what we are doing but it doesn’t do anything but to push us and makes us go harder."

On Memorial Day, police were called to the intersection of Rozzelles Ferry Road and Oregon Street and found Andrews lying in the street.

During the investigation, gunshots rang out near the crime scene. Channel 9 reporter Joe Bruno and his crew were there and were told to duck behind their SUV until the situation calmed down.

Authorities have not released a motive in the case.

McVay was arrested 11 times from February to 2015 and September of 2016.

He was arrested five times for burglary, twice for auto theft, two times for assault and twice for resisting arrest.

Despite that record, Greene wishes more efforts had been made to keep him on the straight and narrow.

"I don’t believe any man deserves to be put in a cage,” Greene said. “I feel like there should be a system, there should be programs to get those kids on the right track."
