GASTONIA, N.C. — An elderly woman was killed after a vehicle and train collided Monday night in Gastonia, officials said.
The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. at the train crossing on Cox Road near N.C. 7, according to emergency workers.
Investigators said Aline Clemmer, 84, of Stanley, was driving a 2010 Hyundai on Cox Road and entered the railroad crossing behind traffic at the stop light at N.C. 7.
A Norfolk Southern train was traveling east on the railroad tracks, causing the signals and barrier devices to activate. According to witnesses, Clemmer moved her vehicle within the crossing but subsequently backed up onto the rail in the path of the train.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
