Police: Woman lifted gate, crossed tracks before struck, killed by Amtrak train

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman was struck and killed by a train Friday night at the intersection of Old Concord and McLean roads, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

Police said Sarah Doe was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:13 p.m.

Doe was the passenger of a Chevrolet Equinox driving down McLean Road, police said.

According to police, the car approached Old Concord Road where a set of railroad crossing gate arms were down and lights were flashing.

Doe manually lifted the gate arms and the car proceeded across the gate arms to the other side of the tracks, police said.

Police said that as Doe proceeded to walk over the tracks to the car, she was hit by the Amtrak passenger train.

The train was traveling from New York to Charlotte.

No injuries were reported on the train, Amtrak officials said.

“This is just a really scary situation,” a passenger on the train said. “You don't expect to travel somewhere and the train to hit someone.”
