HICKORY, N.C. - An investigation is under way in Hickory after an Iraq war veteran was shot.
Police said Billy Dellinger was shot inside his home early Tuesday morning.|
Police arrested Maurice Mayfield in connection with the shooting.
Police were at the scene for more than four hours Tuesday morning collecting evidence from the home. Investigators said there were about 10 people at the home when a man pulled out a handgun and shot Dellinger in the abdomen.
Investigators said there was some type of argument in the minutes leading up the shooting. Police said Mayfield left briefly and returned with a gun, shooting the 35-year-old inside the home.
Friends said Dellinger served two tours in Iraq and is the father of two children. Eyewitness News talked with a friend who asked not to be identified.
"He served overseas and fought for our country for years and he comes home and gets shot in his own home,” the friend said. “It is crazy, unbelievable. It is insane.”
Mayfield is expected to appear in court Wednesday.
