Man shot, killed inside north Charlotte boarding house, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers are investigating after a man's body was found Friday inside a north Charlotte home.

Officers responded just before 10:30 a.m. to the 4400 block of Hubbard Road.

They found victim Jonathan Vereen with a gunshot wound inside the house. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene.

Jeffvory Hughey has been charged with first degree murder, possession of firearm by a felon and shooting into an occupied property.

Police told reporter Mark Becker the crime scene is a boarding house where several people are renting rooms. Officers also said that the victim and the shooter knew each other.

“This is not a random act of violence. There were people in the residence associated with the victim who were able to provide us information. We are running down every bit of that information right now. We are confident this case is going to have a resolution to it pretty quickly," Capt. Brian Foley said.

The house is about 200 yards from a row of tidy new homes where neighbors were stunned by what happened.

“I heard the sirens coming through while I was sitting in the backyard,” Vernetta Mosley said.

Mosley was at home with her grandson.

She said she had not heard any trouble from that boarding house before, but Friday’s shooting was too close.

“It is very close.  And disturbing because of all of the children in the neighborhood.  That was just my concern, that they caught the person, and if the children are safe, we're safe,” she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
