Police identify man killed in shooting at Concord pet spa

CONCORD, N.C. — Concord police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Thursday afternoon near an elementary school.

Officials with the Concord Police Department said it happened around 1 p.m. at Sarah's Pet Spa on Winecoff School Road between Shady Lane Avenue and Orphanage Road.

Officials identified the victim Friday as 39-year-old Deshawn Jermaine Tatem, of Chesapeake, Virginia.

A neighbor told Channel 9 that she stepped outside and heard someone yelling, “She shot my brother, she shot my brother.”

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified said the scene was chaotic.

She said after the shooting, friends of the victim threw a brick through the spa's window to get to him.

“They were just going crazy,” a neighbor said. "I was like, 'Oh my God.’ It was sad.”

Officials with Cabarrus County Schools said Winecoff Elementary School was briefly put on lockdown and that it was lifted around 1:25 p.m.

The Cabarrus County District Attorney’s Office announced that it would not file charges against a woman who shot and killed a man inside the pet spa she owns in Concord, North Carolina. (WSOCTV.com)

Concord police said they believe Tatem was only shot once after some sort of altercation and knew the shooter.

“There's no threat to the community,” said Vashon Clark, of the Concord Police Department. “We feel this was an isolated incident between two known parties in the business complex.”

Police have not made any arrests, but said they have interviewed witnesses and questioned a person of interest.
