Alcohol, speeding contribute in fatal multi-car crash in Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An 18-year-old woman was killed in a four-vehicle crash Sunday morning, according to police.

Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Billy Graham Parkway and West Boulevard at 2:18 a.m. Sunday.

Roberto Ruiz was driving a black 2012 Dodge Charger on West Boulevard when he allegedly ran a red light and hit a car driven by Zandria Sapu, according to officials.

Police said that after the initial crash, Sapu’s car traveled into oncoming traffic and hit two other vehicles.

Investigators said alcohol and speeding contributed to the crash that killed Destani Breannaas. Breannaas was riding in the passenger seat of Sapu’s car when Ruiz allegedly crashed into them.

Three other people had minor injuries in the collision. Police said Ruiz is facing charges of driving under the influence, felony death by motor vehicle and driving without a license.

Police said Sapu is facing charges of driving after drinking under the age of 21.
