Police: Mother shoots 2 children in Gaston Co.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A mother and her two children were taken to the hospital after police said the mother shot her two children.

Police said Tina Stamey Payne was suffering from a "mental illness episode." Payne, her 15-year-old daughter and 29-year-old son were taken to a hospital.

Police said the mother wasn't giving a rational explanation after the incident and is under evaluation. Police said charges are pending.

The weapon was owned by the mother and the three lived together, according to police. The Department of Social Services was called by the hospital and they made a placement for the child with another family.

None of their injuries are life-threatening.
