LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. - A SWAT team in Lincoln County shot and killed a man overnight who they said murdered his estranged wife just hours earlier.
The standoff and shooting happened on Lantern Ridge Drive, about four miles away from where investigators found the murder victim on Salem Church Road.
That standoff ended when police shot the man who they said came out of an apartment building firing at officers just after 12:30 a.m. Friday.
Police said the suspect ran into the apartment and refused to come out.
SWAT team members eventually threw a tear gas canister into the apartment to try and disorient him.
Officials said it all started six hours earlier when the suspect's estranged wife was found dead on Salem Church Road.
Police tracked down the suspect but when an officer tried to talk to him, they said the man took out a gun and shot at officers.
Police fired back and that's when they said the man ran to the apartment complex.
Officers said just after midnight, the man eventually came out and started shooting at police again. That's when police fired back, killing him.
Lincolnton police requested the State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the investigation.
Neither the name of the man nor the murder victim have been released.
