Three shot, one killed, in southeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a homicide in southeast Charlotte.

Jarel D’Shaun Grace, 25, was shot in the 4100 block of Colebrook Road, and later died at the hospital, authorities said.

Police responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at about 2:40 p.m.

Grace was found lying in the front yard with gunshot wounds, officers said.

Another victim was shot multiple times in the 4000 block of Briarhill Drive, but is expected to recover. Police say he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Suspects came to meet with them there in the yard, some type of disturbance took place and both of our victims were shot at the same time,” said Maj. Mike Smathers, of the CMPD.

A third victim left the scene before police arrived and was treated at Carolinas Medical Center-University with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, officers said.

Investigators said three suspects were robbing the victims when the shootings occurred. The victims were together at the time of the shooting, investigators said.

John Harris, a neighbor, said he heard up to eight gunshots.

"All of a sudden, I just heard gunfire and then people running,” Harris said. “It's disturbing. We have a lot of senior citizens, a lot of children in the neighborhood."

Channel 9 was at the scene for hours as investigators collected evidence and went door-to-door trying to find witnesses.

Just a few days earlier, CMPD Chief Kerr Putney addressed the troubling trend of violence across the city.

The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Grace is Charlotte's 23rd homicide in 2017.
