Police: SC woman drowns after jumping off pier, hitting trees

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — A woman from Great Falls drowned Wednesday night while swimming at an old rock quarry in Fairfield County, the coroner confirms.

Officials said Brooke Huffstetler, 26, was swimming with friends when she jumped from a pier and struck a tree before hitting the water.

The Fairfield County coroner said it is a well-known swimming spot and that Huffstetler had been there many times before.

It took about 90 minutes before divers could get her body out.

The side of the quarry has steep walls with branches growing out of it, official said.

The quarry is located off Highway 901 near the Chester/Fairfield County line.

Officials said the quarry is on private property and that swimmers have to trespass to get there.
