STATESVILLE, N.C. —

A Statesville teen faces felony animal cruelty charges after police said he cut off a puppy’s ears.

Officers said Alvertis Hughes, 17, was trying to clip the ears, but say it didn’t work so he cut off the pit bull puppy's ears.

They found the dog at a house on Hill Street.

Hughes was arrested Wednesday, police said.

He also faces a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty for failing to provide adequate care and sustenance for the pup.

His bond was set at $5,000.
