Police: Teen victim of notorious serial killer may have been from NC

Police believe a teenage victim of one of the most notorious killers in U.S. history could be from North Carolina.

Henry Lee Lucas, known as the “Highway Stalker,” said he picked up a teenage girl he knew only as Cheryl in 1981 on a Durham highway. He said he killed her and dumped her body in a ditch in Texas.

Investigators said they need to know the girl’s identity and released a sketch in the hopes that someone will recognize her.

Police believe the girl was between 13 and 17 years old when she was killed. She had auburn hair and was found with a gold ring made from a 1904 double eagle gold coin, officials said.

Lucas admitted to killing hundreds of people but was only convicted in eleven cases. He led investigators to the girl’s body but was not charged with her death.

He died in a Texas prison in 2001 from heart failure.
