Speed, alcohol, drug impairment factors in fatal uptown wreck, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman died Saturday of injuries related to a crash that happened March 16 on the 900 block of Elizabeth near North McDowell Street, officials said.

Police say Anastasiya Omelchenko, 22, who drove a 2007 Lexus, struck two utility poles that service the CATS City LYNX Gold Line Trolley.

The preliminary investigation says she was traveling on East Trade Street and crossed over McDowell Street and onto Elizabeth Avenue, officials said.

Investigators say the vehicle struck the first utility pole near the corner of the intersection and ran off the road onto the sidewalk before striking a second pole and coming to a stop.

Police say speed, alcohol and drug impairment were contributing factors in the wreck, and Omelchenko wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
