CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Channel 9 has learned new details about a planned school that was first reported on Tuesday.

The new high school will be called Smith Academy for Math and Science.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools’ officials are calling it a STEM school, which means science, technology, engineering and math.

CMS already owns the land at 1600 Tyvola Road, in south Charlotte.

CMS school board member Tim Morgan said with capacity for 1,500 students, it will help relieve overcrowding at Ardrey Kell, South Meck and Myers Park high schools.

Also as indicated by a source, the school would have no athletics program.

CMS said the project is contingent on future bonds and county funding.
