CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Mecklenburg County lawmaker wants drivers clogging up the passing lane to move over or pay up.
Sen. Jeff Tarte, R-Mecklenburg, filed a bill Thursday that would fine drivers $200 if they block traffic in the left-hand lane.
“It creates road rage,” Tarte said. “People start tailgating and then when you have people absolutely staying in the left-hand lane, people at the last minute, start passing on the right.”
Ronda Jenkins was on her way to Toledo from Charleston and made a pit stop in Charlotte on Friday.
She doesn't like people who won't let her pass but worries the bill won't change anything.
“As busy as the highways get, how are they going to be able to enforce it?” Jenkins said.
David Gieson thinks the new bill would send a message, and would make driving on the state's highways less aggravating.
“I would think, being pulled over, having a ticket, or having to pay a fine and go to court would get your attention,” Gieson said. “It might make you realize you should be in a different lane.”
North Carolina is one of only a handful of states without this type of law already in place.
At this point, the bill says points won't be added against a driver’s license.
