Public meeting to be held for I-85 widening project

CHINA GROVE, N.C. — Residents in Rowan and Cabarrus counties who could be affected by plans to expand Interstate 85 will speak out about the project Thursday night.

The public meeting comes just two days after details of the plan were first shared with the community.

Residents will have the chance to ask questions and voice their concerns.

North Carolina Department of Transportation said the I-85 widening project from NC 73 in Cabarrus County to the US 29/601 connector in Rowan County will relieve congestion.

Several homes would be torn down if the state decides to add lanes.

Officials said the plan they have proposed is the best way to accomplish that.

The project is still in the planning stage.

The meeting will be held in China Grove from 4 to 7 p.m.
