Quail Hollow two months from hosting PGA Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a little more than two months, the PGA Championship will be played at Quail Hollow Club.

Channel 9 continues to report about the preparations being made for the major golf event.

The PGA Championship will run from Aug. 7-13.

In the hours after the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship, the PGA and Quail Hollow Club began an ambitious undertaking by transforming the grounds, including altering the first four holes of the golf course to make them championship ready.

“The biggest concern was the time that we had and the club had to get it done,” said Kerry Haig, the PGA Tour’s chief championship officer.

While it's not unprecedented, it’s rare to present a course overhaul just more than a year away from hosting a major.

Haig credited Quail Hollow Club president Johnny Harris and course architect Tom Fazio for their confidence and commitment to pull off their bold vision.

“So far, we're just where we want to be, and the course is in great condition. It’s going to be a wonderful test of golf,” Haig said.

With hole No. 1 significantly lengthened and the par 5 fifth hole split into two new holes, the front nine will be an entirely new experience for the championship field in August.

“That, for us at the PGA Championship, was exciting, and hopefully the players will feel the same,” Haig said.
