Rep. Alma Adams to boycott Trump inauguration

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rep. Alma Adams, who represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District, is the latest Democrat to decide not to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

She said she can't “pretend” to celebrate the inauguration of someone who she said has spoken so horribly about women, minorities and the disabled.

Dozens of Democrats have said that they will not be at the inauguration, but Trump’s war of words with Rep. John Lewis in the last week has spurred a few more of them into a boycott, including Adams.

“The kinds of divisive things going on, I can make better use of my time by working with constituents here,” Adams said Tuesday.

A total of 49 Democratic members of Congress, or about 20 percent, announced that they will skip Trump's Friday inauguration.

Adams decided to boycott the event on Tuesday after Lewis called Trump’s election illegitimate and said that he would boycott the inauguration.

Trump fired back that Lewis needs to be more focused on his district, which he said is in horrible shape and infested with crime.

Trump also noted that Lewis also boycotted George W. Bush's inauguration and also called Bush's election illegitimate.

Adams said she thinks Trump needs to focus on bringing the U.S. together.

“I hope, as we move forward, he does that,” Adams said. “I do respect the office and the transition of power.”

Trump tweeted on Tuesday: "People are pouring into Washington in record numbers. Bikers for Trump are on their way. It will be a great Thursday, Friday and Saturday."

The only other Democrat from the Carolinas who plans to boycot the inauguration is Rep. G.K. Butterfield, a Democrat from Congressional District 1 near the coast.
