9-year-old girl hurt in 1 of 3 shootings in Statesville, police say

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A 9-year-old girl was injured in one of two shootings that happened between Monday and Tuesday in Iredell County, according to police.

Officers were first called to a shooting around 10:30 p.m. Monday on Rita Avenue.

A woman said she was at home with her husband and 3-year-old child around 10:30 p.m. when gunfire hit their house and cars.

Sherika Barber was inside the home in bed with her husband and son when the shots were fired.

“We heard something go, ‘Boom! Pow!’” Barber said. “My husband ran down the hall and cut on the light, and that's when we realized we had gunshots all through the house.”

Then police responded to a shooting around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on Caldwell Street, where officers found a home had been hit by several bullets.

Shortly after the shooting, three victims, including a 9-year-old girl, arrived at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Two men were treated for their injuries, while the child was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment. The child is listed in stable condition.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said the two shootings appear to be connected.

“And we do have a person of interest that we're looking for that would have knowledge of what happened last night,” Campbell said.

Campbell said they are comparing notes with Statesville police, who are investigating the shooting on Caldwell Street and a third shooting on Reynolda Drive overnight. No one was hurt in the Reynolda Drive shooting.
