Reports of mold at west Charlotte school cause concerns

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Reports of mold and other health issues are leading to safety concerns at a school in west Charlotte.

Some students said conditions are unbearable and parents are now taking actions, while some parents are questioning school leaders about the safety of their children.

"It's very unacceptable," parent Tondra Franklin said.

Students told Channel 9 they took these pictures inside Bruns Academy on March 8 that show photos show mushrooms growing where the floor is damaged, a sink that's falling off the wall and sagging ceiling tiles.

"I would love to know what classroom, or where this is in the school," parent Monique Zaither said.

After Channel 9 showed Zaither the pictures of the school, she asked her third grader if he's noticed any problems.

"As he was walking down the hallway at school, he says he's seen two mushrooms in the corner," she said.

"My daughter is allergic to mold so I'm very concerned," Franklin said.

The condition of the school has been a concern in the community before. Seven weeks ago, the president of the Historic West End Partners walked through the school after receiving complaints of health hazards.

They didn't see anything in January, but after Channel 9 showed the pictures Wednesday to them, they said they're planning to investigate why no one kept this from happening.

"They need to fix the problem and that's probably why a lot of kids are getting sick in the school," parent Artisha Mclendon said.

Until they get answers, worried parents told Channel 9 they'll keep pushing the school for more information.

"I guess they're not doing what they're supposed to do with cleaning and making sure everything is right for the safety of the kids," Mclendon said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said the district is aware of the issues. They also said some of the concerns just became an issue and they are all being addressed.
