Residents discuss I-77 toll project at Coffee Chat meeting Monday

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Residents can learn more about the Interstate 77 toll lane project Monday at the monthly “Coffee Chat” meeting for the town of Cornelius.

The leader of the Widen I-77 group and a representative for the I-77 business plan organization will join the meeting to discuss the future of the project and how they plan to eliminate traffic congestion.

The meeting started at 9 a.m. at the Acropolis Restaurant on Catawba Avenue.

The project will add express lanes along I-77 in either direction between north Charlotte and Iredell County.

When it is complete, vehicles with three or more passengers will be able to use the lanes for free.

Cars with fewer passengers must pay a toll if they want to use the express lanes.

The original, general purpose lanes will remain free to use.

Crews will close several I-77 lanes this week while they work on the project.

From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day this week starting Monday, I-77 will be closed in either direction between exits 31 and 35 and between exit 28 and the Mt. Holly-Huntersville road overpass.

On I-277, lanes will be closed between the I-77 interchange and North Graham Street.
