Residents meet Friday over draft bill over NC-SC border

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Residents in North and South Carolina are concerned about a draft of a bill that will change the state line.

Jeff Langley's home sits in South Carolina, but his front yard is divided by the state line.

If the proposal passes, by 2016 Langley will live in North Carolina.

More than 50 residential proprieties would be affected by the new map.

Langley, who was unable to refinance his home because of the long border debate, went to a meeting Friday where the Boundary Commission hashed out a draft of the bill. It will eventually be introduced by lawmakers in each state.

Lawmakers have included many provisions for taxes, utilities and items such as which school a student may attend and eligibility for in-state tuition.

In 2013, Channel 9 reported about the owner of a convenience store in South Carolina that thrives on lower gas prices, alcohol and fireworks sales.

Lawmakers said Friday his store and other businesses in the area will remain unchanged.

The commission hopes to have the bill introduced to lawmakers by this summer and passed by Jan. 1, 2016.
