Residents wary about proposed 120-acre development in Mint Hill

MINT HILL, N.C. — A proposed development in a Mint Hill Forest will be the largest of it's kind around Southern North Carolina.

The proposed 120-acre development from Keller Williams could even bring exciting times to Mint Hill.

Several residents said they're not against it necessarily, but they do have some serious concerns even though it is early in the process.

Tonya Seate has lived her entire life in her Mint Hill home, which was given to her family by her father.

Just the thought of a nearby development brings her to tears.

"It's going to be very hard if all this construction in front of us cause we're going to have to sit there and watch it," Seate said.

Right now, residents commute to Charlotte for entertainment as simple as seeing a movie in a theater.

The site backs up to the town hall and stretches all the way back to Nelson Road and the plan lays over entire neighborhoods.

"I think this is potentially a great opportunity for us. We haven't given them a green light to go ahead with everything," Mint Hill commissioner Tina Ross said.

Residents want to know if they're going to be bought out or forced to deal with construction and traffic.

"No, I really don't think they do because there will be series, any rezoning will be a series of hearings and public opportunities for input," Ross said.

Keller Williams said the plan includes two-thirds retail and office space and one-third residential and entertainment.

Neighbors like Seate want to have a say.

"As long as they include us, we'll be happy about that," she said.

It could be years before residents see any kind of changes to the piece of land.
