Authorities investigate 2 attacks against NC GOP headquarters

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — Two different law enforcement agencies nearly 200 miles apart are investigating attacks on North Carolina Republican offices.

Shots were fired into the Pamlico County Republican headquarters in eastern North Carolina for the second time in three weeks.

More security cameras and lights have been added outside since the latest shooting that was reported Tuesday morning.

Investigators said one shot went through a Gov. Pat McCrory sign hung in the window.

"We're treating this just as we'd treat any other crime in Pamlico County, and trying to investigate to the fullest and hopefully bring those folks to justice," Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis told Channel 9 via Facetime. The second shooting happened within a couple days of the Orange County Republican headquarters being firebombed.

"When there are violent incidents like this, you do fear there will be copycat incidents," University of North Carolina-Charlotte political science professor Eric Heberlig said. “Somebody from the other side will think, 'If they're doing it, I should do it, too.’”

No one has been arrested for either crime. Now the governor is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the person who caused the damage in Orange County.

Earlier this week, Mecklenburg County GOP chairwoman Claire Mahoney told Channel 9 security at the local party headquarters is being stepped up.

Following the firebombing in Orange County, presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump spoke out against the attack on Twitter.
