Richard Petty among 5 to get NC tourism award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — (AP) NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty is among five people being honored in North Carolina for their contributions to the success of the state's tourism industry.

Petty received the Winner's Circle awards, given annually since 2004, by the N.C. Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development.

The division honored Petty for his racing history, his race shop and museum, as well as his support of tourism in Randolph County.

Also honored were Horace Holden, Aurelia Kennedy and Payson Kennedy, founders of the Nantahala Outdoor Center, and Charlotte Deputy City Manager Ron Kimble.

The awards were announced Monday in Charlotte.
