Salisbury High School plagued by lockdowns, fights

SALISBURY, N.C. — Lockdowns and fights have plagued Salisbury High School recently.

Officials said police investigations led to two lockdowns this school week.

"Lots of lockdowns and we don't know why," said Emelia Parker, who has two children at the school. "We don't get a lot of communication about what's really going on with the lockdowns."

Leaders said in an email to Channel 9 that Salisbury High School was placed on a "code yellow lockdown" Tuesday, which means locking all doors and banning outdoor activity.

They said it was "under the advisement of law enforcement while they conducted an investigation regarding a possible threat."

However, when Channel 9 asked what that threat was about, the district wouldn't respond.

Another potential threat led to another lockdown two days later. On that day we asked again about the specific threat and once again, officials gave no response.

Parents may have good reason for concern.

Last fall, Channel 9 reported that police stepped up security around the school after two gang-related shootings nearby. Also, leaders said in February and March of this year there were four fights at the school. They said they were working to decrease student aggression.

"Parents should not be put in this situation," said Salisbury City Council Member Kenny Hardin.

He had gotten dozens of calls from frustrated parents and said they deserve answers.

"We need to get out of this mindset that we're trying to suppress information for fear of embarrassing our institutions or our city," Hardin said. "It's more embarrassing when I get 30 calls from people and we don't give the information."
