Several families displaced after fire damages Kannapolis apartments

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Officials said everyone was able to make it out of a Kannapolis apartment unharmed after flames tore through the building overnight.

Just before 2 a.m., firefighters responded to a reported fire in the Cabarrus Arms Apartments on Wilkes Drive. When they arrived, fire crews saw thick smoke and heavy flames coming from the two-story complex.

Kannapolis police officers helped evacuate those who lived in the building and no injuries were reported.

Most of the fire was contained to one apartment, although several units were affected by water and smoke damage.

The American Red Cross is helping the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
