Shattered, leaning utility pole held together with caution tape in Belmont

BELMONT, N.C. — A splintered utility pole in Belmont that's roped together with caution tape is leaning dangerously over Central Avenue near West Woodrow Avenue.

A tree branch and some caution tape is all that is holding up the pole that has been endangering drivers for 10 days.

The damage was caused by a car crashing into the pole over the Memorial Day holiday weekend

"The more you look at it, the more concerned you get," pastor Sam Warner said.

Warner is the pastor of the church next to the damaged pole. There's also a day care across the street.

Warner said he has been waiting for repair crews to fix the pole for a week and a half.

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene of the wreck, but it wasn't until Channel 9 showed up 10 days later that AT&T finally showed up.

"Whatever it is, it'd be good to get it fixed pretty quick. I think it does need immediate attention," Warner said.

Channel 9's Mark Barber asked AT&T why they didn't rush to repair the pole sooner. He also asked who left it leaning dangerously for days.

They didn't respond to those questions. Instead, AT&T said the pole was stable, but they would start trying to repair it on Tuesday.

"I think anybody driving by and saw it would be glad they passed it," Warner said.

He said he's held his breath on the nights that wind and rain have beaten the battered pole.

"I've tried not to think about it if you want to know the truth, but your presence here, I'm sure it's been noticed," he said.

This is the second time in six months a driver has snapped the pole on Central Avenue.

After crews take care of the immediate danger, neighbors hope the city will turn their attention to the issue of speeding drivers down the street.
